BACKGROUND

Wallet apps are a fixture in today's marketplace, where every company is vying for your patronage and loyalty. Keeping all your cards in one place has already been done by Google Wallet and Apple Wallet. However, that is as far as it goes. The revolutionary Card app is designed to manage your loyalty cards, your email subscriptions from associated programs, as well as paying for items and tracking points.

Problem

Capturing customers via sign-ups for loyalty programs is often skipped or missed during check-out simply because the customer has neither the time nor patience for it. Other times, sign-ups are declined because customers do not wish to receive spam mail.

Opportunity

A universal sign-up program in which customers can simply scan their phone at a desired location, and they are automatically enrolled in the loyalty program at said store without additional hassle. Bulk opt-in/opt-out functionality make it easy to manage multiple subscriptions at a time, and having all special offers gathered in one place means your savings are easily accessible when and where you need them.

Target Audience

Britany (University Student)

University Student
Toronto, ON,

“Besides spending most of my time at school, I like to unwind by occasionally doing a bit of shopping, and getting a deal on things feels better and helps me stay under budget."

Goals

  • Keep all loyalty cards organized.
  • Sign up for new memberships quickly and easily.
  • See reward points in a single location.

Background

Britany is a student at Toronto Metropolitan University, spending most her time in class and studying, but on her off days she enjoys spending time with friends and shopping for school supplies, clothes, and hobby items

Pain Points

  • Signing up for memberships takes time and effort.
  • Unsubscribing from individual newsletters is a time-consuming process.
  • Juggling multiple apps for points and reward cause frustration and confusion.

Anthony (Father)

Economics Professor
Vancouver, BC

"My job allows me to spend more time with my kids and take them with me to get household essentials.  Being able to easily save money with loyalty programs allow us to put more money towards things that are important to my family."

Goals

  • Manage cards and memberships easily.
  • Spend minimal time doing so.
  • Maximize savings by taking advantage of special offers in loyalty programs.

Background

Anthony teaches economics at UBC and prefers to spend his time teaching young minds, or at home with his wife and children.  The time spent going shopping is kept to a minimum, and being able to save where he can means the money can be put towards a vacation or paying off their mortgage early.

Pain Points

  • Unwanted spam emails.
  • Spelling out names and emails while rushed or with children.
  • Multiple apps for member cards and payment cards.
  • Not knowing what offers are available and missing out on savings.

Usability Testing

Testing with users on the high-fidelity prototype resulted in a positive reaction to the email “unsubscribe” option and the ability to scan through a sign up at a retailer when checking out.

The Takeaways

The streamlined ability to sign up for programs as well as manage subscriptions was a welcome feature, meaning users didn’t have to look for the last email they received to unsubscribe but could instead do it in-app as quickly as deleting a phone contact.

The Next Steps

Real world implementation linking with rewards programs as well as creating a barcode system that current Point of Sale systems can recognize and use to identify customer profile at a scan rather than manually asking for names, emails, postal codes, etc.
