BACKGROUND

A theatre app to streamline the purchasing process for moviegoers. The new flow adds a feature that displays theatre location and show times available based on which movie and how many tickets you require within a certain radius.

Problem

Current theatre apps don't have certain specific filter results that moviegoers may require when searching for tickets in groups of three or more.

Opportunity

Increase search and filter capabilities so moviegoers can easily find their next movie based on certain search requirements and parameters. Also include pre-purchasing of concession snacks.

Target Audience

Sharon (Mother)

HR Manager
Vancouver, BC

"In between work and being a mom, I’d like to spend more time watching movies and less time buying tickets, because while I'm struggling on my phone, one of the kids is getting up to something!"

Goals

  • Find seat accommodations for a large group.
  • Have in-seat service for concession so children are consistently supervised.

Background

Sharon is a 36-year-old working mom, and sometimes likes to go with her family to see the latest Disney movies. Now that things have taken a better turn, she and her husband want to give their kids the theater experience they had as children, which means grabbing oversized buckets of popcorn and watching movies on the big screen. Less time organizing the outing means more time building memories with the next generation.

Pain Points

  • Showing theatres that don't have availability for required number of seats.
  • Seat selections aren't up to date.

Mark (Student)

University Student
Calgary, AB

"I like going to the movies with my boyfriend when we have a free night, but the time it takes to narrow down our options takes too long." “I like going to the movies with my boyfriend when we have a free night, but the process to actually get tickets always takes too long.”

Goals

  • Find and buy movie tickets quickly.
  • Be able to pick ideal seat types and locations.

Background

Mark and his boyfriend Alex, both cinephiles, enjoy going to the movies on the rare occasion their schedules line up for a free night. With COVID restrictions easing up, Mark would like to spend more time watching movies with his partner and less time struggling to secure tickets.

Pain Points

  • Having to restart search requirements when switching theatres due to not having desired seat selection.
  • Spending more time than willing to and possibly giving up.

Usability Testing

Users testing the prototypes showed not having to cycle through theatres or re-entering search parameters repeatedly was a welcome addition, though the food and drink step wasn't always necessary, as they may change their minds between buying the tickets and arriving at the theatre.

Visual Design

The Takeaways

The filtering system was a welcome addition for people who regularly go to theatres with multiple people.

The Next Steps

Connect with movie theatres for real time implementation and testing.
